DeSoto County, with its western Delta edge, doesn't look like a Dust Bowl region, but there's plenty of at-risk acreage that would meet requirements for federal aid under an erodible-soils initiative.
"We've got these sandy, windblown soils on the bluffs and hilltops, and a good bit of that would qualify," said Scott Griffith of the DeSoto office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
"In the Western states, erosion impairs air quality with dust storms," he said.
