GRAFTON – With the large numbers of individuals being affected by both oil and gas companies, one group has taken the challenge of providing answers to some commonly asked questions concerning property owner rights. “The West Virginia Surface Owners’ Rights Organization (WV SORO) is a growing statewide membership organization whose mission is to protect landowners from abuses by oil and gas drillers.”
Statistics show that West Virginia is second only to Texas in the number of gas and oil wells in the United States. As the industry continues to expand in the region, West Virginia surface owners have found that they have very few rights to protect themselves unless they own the mineral resources under their land. To understand how quickly this industry is growing, records show that new drilling permits have more than tripled in recent years here in West Virginia.
