Tales of horsetail and other plants native to Central Texas

We value our native plants for many things: their thrift, their hardiness, their beauty and the unique sense of place they provide. But we are frequently unaware of the amazing stories they have to tell us.

Plants have ancient connections with humankind and figure prominently in our culinary, medicinal and material history, but these associations and uses are all but forgotten today. Here are just a few examples:

Yaupon holly. This attractive evergreen shrub is well-known among landscapers throughout our region and yet its herbal claim to fame is lost to time.
